Topmanagement Cosco Shipping ambieert 2 miljoen teu in Zeebrugge

Senior management of Cosco Shipping in Zeebrugge informed port authorities about their growth ambitions with the container terminal. The Chinese are developing the role of a Western European hub for Chinese and international logistics players.

Yesterday on Tuesday 27 November, port authorities welcomed high visit from China in Zeebrugge. Cosco’s top management personally came to explain their plans with the container terminal they took over from the Danish Maersk group last year.

“Our guests visited their own terminal and the port. During the meeting in our harbor house they explained us their growth plans. They have great ambitions to lead  Zeebrugge as a Western European hub ” says Joachim Coens, managing director of the port (sixth from left). Cosco will be a crucial transport link for Chinese and other international companies who, in cooperation with the Chinese project developer Lingang, plan to settle in the Maritime Logistics Zone.

Ambition 2 million teu

In a conversation with Flows magazine – which is published on 11 December – managing director Carla Debart (first lady from the left in the photo) talks about the plans of Cosco Shipping Ports with its container terminal CSP Zeebrugge.

“After the acquisition at the end of 2017, 2018 was all about integration and reinforcement. From 2019, we are preparing in all areas for ambitious growth as a bridge between China, Europe and the rest of the world. Last year we achieved 330,000 teu and this year we grew to 400,000 teu, thanks to inducement calls and ad hoc calls. Our ambition initially was 1 million teu and 2 million teu in the medium term. It is reasonably certain that we might receive a new call from Ocean Alliance from 1 April 2019. The additional transhipments for both import and export can have a major effect. “
